After a car accident that killed his parents, now thirteen-year-old Trace Carter lives with his free-spirited-artist aunt in a New York brownstone. One day, he sees a young, disheveled black boy in old-fashioned clothing and realizes the boy is a ghost, possibly from the asylum fire. This ghost helps him learn about his own heritage while helping absolve himself of guilt related to the accident.
